Coláiste Iósaef – Curriculum

“Education has a deep and fundamental role in getting people to identify and connect with their talents.” – Sir Ken Robinson

Junior Cycle

The college provides a broad and balanced course of study in a range of curricular areas for Junior Certificate.

The college also provides the Junior Certificate Schools Programme

The programme is an intervention within the Junior Certificate Programme. It provides a curriculum framework which will assist the college and individual teachers in adopting a student-centred approach to the Junior Certificate.

The Junior Certificate School Programme is based on the concept that all young people are capable of real success in school and that they can have a positive experience of school. The Junior Certificate School Programme has been designed to ensure that young people can benefit from their time in school and enjoy the experience of improvement and success. The emphasis on active learning and on the development of basic skills in the programme is highlighted.

Senior Cycle

Building on the foundation of the Junior Cycle, the Senior Cycle aims to provide a comprehensive, high-quality learning environment which prepares individual students for further education or for immediate entry into the workplace.

Senior Cycle Subjects

There are three Leaving Certificate Programmes on offer in Coláiste Iósaef.

  • Leaving Certificate (Established)
  • Leaving Certificate Applied
  • Leaving Certificate Vocational Programme

All students applying through the CAO from 2017 will be awarded points under the new scale.

Leaving Cert Applied

LCA is ideally suited to students who wish to follow a course aimed at acquiring practical skills, work experience and an opportunity to accumulate credits through on-going assessment.

Students spend four days in school following their timetable and one day of each week is spent with an employer.

This is a two-year programme.

Leaving Cert Vocational Programme

LCVP is similar to the Traditional Leaving Certificate with the added opportunity to enhance business skills by taking a course in Enterprise Education, Preparation for Work and Information Technology. Students wishing to take the LCVP must include specific subject combinations in their choice of subjects for the Leaving Certificate.

LCVP students receive the same certificate as other Leaving Certificate students but their Certificate includes an additional statement of the results of the Link Modules.

Grades for the Link Modules are as follows:

  • Distinction 80% – 100%
  • Merit 65% – 79%
  • Pass 50% – 64%

The Link Modules are recognised for points purposes by the Institutes of Technology and the Universities.
